PostSubject: 9MM Carbine   Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:28 am

Alright now! I do not want to hear any bashing of my new used carbine! I have had a Hi-Point 9MM carbine for a year or so now. I broke down the other day when I got two new ones in and snatched one of the 9MM carbines for me! Brand new with a tactical stock and has the foregrip and sling with it. It is a Hi-Point! I hear all kinds of bad things and I understand. But, when you look at the other carbines out there and they are twice the price for nothing more than what you are getting, it is hard to justify spending the extra money on a gun that you will use to plink with. Now, I am waiting until I get the 45ACP Carbines in and will snatch one of those also! The 9MM was $250 and the 45ACP is going to be $299. Where else can you get a carbine for that kind of money to shoot the crap out of and if it gets scratched or banged around it is still okay? I am having a blast with this thing. It is cheap to shoot, grandson loves it and it is pretty darn accurate up to 100 yards! I may get a small 4X9 scope to put on it before it is all over but it sure is a great little gin to shoot. No recoil and 10 round magazines keep grandson from shooting up the whole countryside before running out and having to reload! I just like the darn thing. I will let you know when I get 2 to 3K down range with it to see if I still like the thing but I expect I still will!!!

I have been tardy about posting a review of the 9MM carbine I acquired and thought I would get it posted for all to peruse! Here we go!

Hi Point 995TS Carbine
By Wayne Northcutt / Moderator and Admin

When I first started looking into a carbine other than a military surplus, I found several in varied calibers but all were fairly pricey. That is until I ran across a Hi Point 995TS in 9MM. It is rather ugly! So much so that the Anti-Gun Protesters will go crazy over the looks of the carbine if for no other reason! In fact, it is so ugly it is quite attractive.

However, I needed a carbine that my grandson could shoot, would not put me in the poor house to supply ammo for and was fairly accurate out to roughly 100 yards. I decided with little hesitation to acquire a Hi Point 995TS if for no other reason than the price point. When it came in, brand spanking new, it was under $300 complete. Rather hard these days to obtain a carbine in any caliber other than 22LR for under $300.

I read several reviews from owners all from the internet. As usual there were as many happy owners as there were complainers for the Hi Point brand and this carbine in particular. After sorting through the postings for this carbine, I decided the only real issues were feeding issues that should be readily cured by myself or a couple of shooting buddies and other issues read about could be taken care of by the manufacturer based on their Lifetime Manufacturer Warranty. Unbelievable! Get this: A carbine in 9MM for under $300 with a manufacturer lifetime warranty. That was the final obstacle for me to cross. If anything at all happened to the carbine, Hi Point will take care of it as long as I own it. It is in writing on their website and I used it once on a pistol they made. Less than a week turnaround and problem solved with an extra mag sent back with the gun at no charge!

When it came in, the carbine was packed very well. Two mags were wrapped in plastic and no damage in shipping. Bolt and charging handle were wrapped and not installed and included was a basic sling and a manual. I had also ordered a double mag holder that mounts to the stock and four extra mags. One of the extras I plan on adding to the carbine will be a full length rail. There are so many things that can be done with a full rail I would consider it a necessity for a carbine of any manufacture.

Within the first week I had torn it completely down and stripped the carbine of all factory lube with Froglube! It really cleaned the trigger group, receiver and barrel so when I put the Froglube liquid oil on the carbine handled like a precision piece of equipment. The difference was almost unbelievable and it is my belief the Froglube on this particular carbine made my first range trip (outside my back door into the pasture) flawless.

With my first experience of shooting this particular carbine, I bore sighted it and then adjusted the iron sights ever so slight. Within fifteen minutes and two slight adjustments, the carbine was giving me 1.5” groups of three at 50 feet. Moved out to 75 feet and got 2” groups of three without further adjustments. Based on the use I have for it, I am very happy with the patterns and have made no further adjustments to the sights. As long as I use it for the grandson to shoot and for home defense I do not feel a need to upgrade sights, scope or additional accessories. I can see with the 1500 or so rounds down range with it so far that I might be tempted to put a red dot scope or additional scope options and try to get into the 150 foot range with it. For right now, it is the perfect little carbine for my needs and I am a very happy owner. In an affordable caliber carbine I do not think there is a better value in the market place right now than this. I wish I could say the same for all my guns!
