I'm sorry that I don't have a link to the story to share with you guys but I'm sure you all heard the story over the week end. The State Dept. has issued a vague travel warning for Europe in general. There are a lot of questions and issues regarding this announcement but I have just ONE question.

What do they know that WE don't???

What I have heard so far was they are referring to the threat where several people were in training in different locations. Other than that, I expect we know more than they do! Our intelligence sucks if that. I am trying to be nice and generous but I am sorry, it just sucks. The mice could be runnign away with the cheese and our intelligence folks would want to know why the clerks at the grocery store didn't deliver more cheese!!! They are not much as an intelligence group! I suspect the threat has been there for a few weeks and we just happened to stumble across it because we could not get around it and it was so obvious! then and only then would I expect them to come out with any kind of a threat warning at all!!

It involves some terrorist training camps located in Germany.

DNC Raises More Than $16 Million In September (RTTNews) - The United States has issued a travel advisory cautioning its citizens traveling to or residing in European countries against potential for terrorist attacks there.

The State Department said on Sunday that European governments had initiated measures to guard against any terrorist strikes and some countries had spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions. However, it did not identify any particular country and did not urge Americans to avoid particular venues or avoid traveling.

Reminding U.S. citizens about the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure, the advisory said that these individuals might choose to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests.

The advisory pointed out that terrorists had targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services in the past and urged U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and to adopt best practices to protect themselves when traveling.

The State Department further said it continued to work closely with European allies on the threat from international terrorism, including al-Qaeda. In this regard, it said, information was routinely shared between the U.S. and its key partners in order to disrupt terrorist plottings, identify and take action against potential operatives, and strengthen U.S. defenses against potential threats.

The advisory came as Europe remains on a high state of alert following warnings that Islamist militants are planning commando-style attacks in the UK, Germany and France and had on their sight landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and Berlin's Central Station.

The alleged plot was revealed to interrogators at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan by a German citizen of Afghan origin who was captured in the war-torn country over the summer.

It was suspected that some 20 British youths were being trained in al-Qaeda run terror camps in Pakistan's tribal belt to be sent back to attack European cities.

Hamburg cell at heart of terrorist plot against Europe
Posted by Joerg Wolf in Transatlantic Relations on Monday, October 4. 2010

The US, the UK, France and now Japan issued warnings of a Mumbai-styled terrorist plot against European cities. Every government warns its citizens of an increased chance of attacks. Everybody? No, a small country at the Baltic Sea appears immune to fear mongering and minds its own business. (Hm, I tried to paraphrase the introduction of the Asterix comics, but probably failed.)

A group of jihadists from the German city of Hamburg are alleged to be at the heart of the recent al Qaeda plot to launch co-ordinated terrorist attacks against European cities, according to European intelligence officials. The plan prompted the U.S. State Department to issue a Europe-wide security advisory for Americans traveling in Europe. Japan issued a similar alert Monday, citing the warnings issued by the United States and by Britain, which raised the level highest for France and Germany.

German authorities seem to be much less concerned than Washington, London and Paris. I wonder why. Any theories? Are Germans ignorant ("nobody will attack our peaceloving country" because the Age of Aquarius has started) or are we the only non-fear mongers, who are skeptical of "the Al-Qaeda brew"? German analysts have not yet interrogated Sidiqi. Perhaps that explains the difference? Spiegel points out:

Still, it remains unclear whether the reports can be considered reliable or whether Sidiqi's claims are the typical al-Qaida brew, consisting of one-third truth, one-third lies and one-third omission.
