PostSubject: HERE's a peach of a guy!!   Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:06 pm

Not even the stain of political scandal could keep New York's leading politicians from celebrating Congressman Charles Rangel's 80th birthday at a celeb-studded fundraiser. Though fighting to keep his seat in Congress before a looming public trial on ethics charges, Rangel managed to convince dozens of New York's local, state and federal power players to show up at the elegant Plaza Hotel. Charles Rangel clearly relished his victory. Earlier in the day, the New York Daily News' Daily Politics blog confirmed that the Rangel fundraiser was sold out despite weeks of uncertainty about whom among the invited dignitaries would attend as the Rangel ethics scandal grew. Charles Rangel has represented the 15th Congressional District in upper Manhattan since 1971, and parlayed his seniority into the chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee when Democrats took over Congress in 2008. He was forced to resign as the committee's head when the ethic charges leaked out, but refuses to resign his seat. What's more, he faces several Democratic opponents for his job in the September 14 primary this year, including a challenge from Adam Clayton Powell IV, the grandson of Adam Clayton Powell Jr., whom Rangel defeated to win his first term as Congressman back in 1970. New York's pols at Rangel's birthday fundraiser seemed to realize the need for party unity as a tough midterm election season approaches. Those gathered at the event included several current candidates for state and federal offices, who used the podium to make a few stump speeches. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Democratic nominee for governor; Kirsten Gillibrand, facing an election in the Senate, and Mayor Mike Bloomberg rubbed elbows with the Rev. Al Sharpton and singer Dionne Warwick, who brought the house down with a rendition of her famous ballad, "That's What Friends Are For." There couldn't have been a more apt theme song for Rangel's political reckoning.
