Texas Lawmaker to Introduce Anti-Immigration Bill

A Texas lawmaker says she plans to push for a law similar to Arizona's get-tough immigration measure.

San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle report Wednesday that Republican Rep. Debbie Riddle of Tomball says she will introduce the measure in the January legislative session.

The new Arizona law would require local and state law enforcement to question people about their immigration status — and make it a crime for immigrants to lack registration documents.

Riddle says if the federal government did its job "Arizona wouldn't have to take this action, and neither would Texas."

Democrats say such legislation is misguided and predict it will hurt the GOP politically.

Then there is this...

Texas Will Not Follow Arizona

ORANGE — Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Tuesday that Texas would not follow in the footsteps of the state of Arizona in dealing with the illegal immigration issue.

Arizona lawmakers recently approved an immigration bill that would make it a state crime for illegal immigrants to not have an alien registration document. It also requires police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.

Gov. Perry was in Orange for the reopening of the Honeywell Specialty Additives facility that was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Perry said no when asked if Texas would in the future pass a law such as Arizona’s.

“The bigger issue has to do with the abysmal border security,” Perry said. “There has been a total lack of effort by the federal government to protect our borders. In 2005 I first asked to bring in propelled drones to use as a tool. The feds have no interest in securing our borders. Security requires coordination from local, state and federal governments. We in Texas need to focus on what we can do.

“We are spending billions on the war on terror, which I fully support, but we need the same kind of support with our borders.”

So I wonder, which one is accurate. Are they or aren't they?

I expect it will be introduced and go to committee. Once there, the water will be tested to see what the temperature is and at that point it may die on the vine to never see the light of day. It sounds good but who is going to pay for it. That is what Gov Perry is saying. It sounds nice to pass all this legislation but who is going to pick up the tab. I think he is thinking we can get more done through border security and maybe gain as much there as anywhere else.
