PostSubject: Disabled Veterans   Thu Jan 13, 2011 10:48 am

I'm not sure if you've heard about the"Americans Disabled for Life Memorial" but the ground breaking ceremony took place this week in D.C. I want to bring it up because it will become a part of my life when it's completed, my name will be on this memorial. I'm very proud of the fact that my name will be there for as long as the memorial exists. The way I feel is that it'll be written in stone that I served and I hope people who see it will say, "He's a patriot". I think that's the highest compliment I could receive.

I have not heard of it but I also think that is about as good as it gets. The only thing I can think of that even comes close is for the ones of us that are here adn know everyone to step up and say to the vets on the forum that we do understand and do appreciate what you have done for our country! We cannot say it enough so one more time, Thanks For Your Service It Really Is Appreciated!

I have a book of unpublished poems my freind George Hoffman wrote some 20 years ago. George was in the 1st Marine up in the North. He wrote his poems to help him cope with the horrors that he encountered. VV this one is for you.

The Brotherhood by George Haffman

I write poems about the Marines,
cause they are what I know.
But in that war across the sea,
Marines were not alone.
It was all just one big family.
for the veterans of the Nam.

Con Thien was bloody,
But not worse than Dak To,
And the "one-o-one"at Dong Ap Bia,
put on a damn good show.
Then there were the Green Berets,
the first to see the Nam,
a braver bunch of fighting men,
you'll not see very often.

Then there were the zoomies,
who covered us each day,
and took the war right to Hanoi,
when the delegates walked away.
And dont forget the chopper jocks.
who flew into the thick of it.
and saved some boys we might have lost,
a tougher bunch...I dont it.

Marines and Army all were grunts,
but then, there's the Navy blue,
the guys who flew the Alpha strikes,
and cruised the rivers too.
And dont forget the SEALS, my freinds,
of sea and air and land,
who took the was the Charlies home,
and still came back again.

The Air Cav met the Nua,
at a place the called Pleiku,
the helped to lift the Khe Sanh siege,
and took Hue city too.
The yellow legs were tough as nails,
Headhunters in their prime,
and when old Charlie met these guys
he usually did the dying.

Yes, if you're seeking glory,
there's lots to spread around.
And if you're seeking brotherhood,
my freinds, it was all around.
Forwhat we had in common,
that no one liked or wanted,
on that strange and distant shore.

So If we lost a part of us,
in that dim yesterday,
we still retain our brotherhood,
and we did not run away.
We're all of us the same it seems,
more so, as time goes on,
cause it's hard to tell the differances,
when uniforms are gone.

Semper fi brother.

Nice poem UF! Heavy thoughts and lots of hidden meanings there. Very interesting how his mind works and how he shares his thoughts!

George is a good freind, I met him when I started working where I do now. George was in the Marines in 66, Was around Chu Lai. One of the fire fights he was in was a real barn burner for him. Their camp was infiltrated by sappers and eventualy over run. It was so intense that they started running out of ammo. The last couple VC that he eliminated, he had to use and entenching tool. Where he was they had it real rough. They finally took him out of there when he contracted hepitites. Thant broke his heart and was his last straw. After losing most of ther men in his unit that year he wanted to go the same way. In a blaze of glory. For him it didn't happen, and he suffer with guilt for many years. I was able to help George out of that hole he was in. He needed a good freind, and I showed up. I am so glad they I did. He's a good man. I will share more of his poems as time permits. I'm hoping that someday I can get these poems published for him. He now lives out in Pennsylvania. He write songs now, again without much luck. I miss him.

Wish him our best and tell him to continue to write his songs. If they are as good as his poems, he will do fine!

UF,
Your friend, George Hoffman, is definitely a special man and the same is true for yourself. His writing comes from the heart it's very easy to see that and his use of the word "Brotherhood" is most appropriate. EVERY Vet deserves respect and recognition. It's hard for me to explain why it makes me feel so good when you guys and strangers say "Thanks for serving" to me. It goes right to my heart and makes me pause for a moment and say to myself "Was he talking to me?"
